The Cuban sandwich, sometimes simply called a "Cubano," has its roots in the vibrant culture of Cuba but has made its mark worldwide as a staple in cafes, food trucks, and kitchens everywhere. A perfect blend of juicy pork, melted cheese, tangy mustard, and pickles - all hugged between crispy bread – a well-made Cubano is truly a symphony of flavors and textures. Let's journey together to create the best Cuban sandwich using ingredients you can easily find in your local grocery store. This Cuban sandwich recipe lays out the perfect process.

Perfect cuban sandwich recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 loaf of Cuban bread (or substitute with a French or Italian loaf if necessary)

  • 1 lb roasted pork (store-bought or freshly roasted)

  • 8 thin slices of ham

  • 8 slices of Swiss cheese

  • Dill pickles, thinly sliced

  • Yellow mustard

  • Softened butter

Preparation:

  1. Prepare the Bread: Start with the star of our sandwich – the bread. Slice your Cuban bread into 6-inch portions. Then, slice each portion horizontally to open, but not completely apart.

  2. Layer Your Ingredients: On one half of each bread portion, layer 2 slices of ham, followed by the roasted pork, Swiss cheese, and a couple of slices of pickles. On the other half, spread a generous amount of yellow mustard.

  3. Close and Butter: Close your sandwich and lightly butter the outside of both the top and bottom.

  4. Grill to Perfection: Preheat a skillet or panini press over medium heat. Place the sandwich on the skillet and press down with a heavy pan or a spatula to flatten it slightly. If using a panini press, simply close it. Grill the sandwich for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is crispy and golden and the cheese has melted.

  5. Serve and Enjoy: Once grilled to perfection, remove from heat and let it sit for a minute. Then, slice in half diagonally and serve immediately.

This classic Cuban sandwich is the perfect melding of flavors and textures that will transport your taste buds straight to the streets of Havana. Best enjoyed with a side of plantain chips or a cold beverage. Stay tuned for more sandwich delights in our upcoming posts!
